2012 Live Surgeries Schedule

Robot-Assisted Surgery: Advances in Oncology, Image Guidance, and Reconstruction
Saturday, May 19
9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Georgia World Congress Center – Sidney Marcus Auditorium – Building A, Level 4
Program Directors: John Davis, MD and Jeffrey Holzbeierlein, MD

This session will present 3 robot-assisted procedures: reconstructive ureteral surgery (pyeloplasty or reimplantation), partial nephrectomy with fluorescence imaging, and salvage (post-radiation) prostatectomy. Audience participation is encouraged and time will be allotted for Q&A by moderators. Representatives from the AUA, the Society of Urologic Robotic Surgeons (SURS), the Society of Urologic Oncology, and the Endourological Society developed this year's exciting program.

Objectives: After attending this course, participants should be able to:
  • demonstrate the proper use of robot-assisted surgery in reconstructing the obstructed upper urinary tract
  • integrate fluorescence imaging into the technique of resecting a small renal mass with robot assistance
  • recognize and solve the potential difficulties experienced when operating in a previously radiated surgical field, and to evaluate whether or not the robotic technique has advantages over an open technique
9 – 9:45 a.m. Reconstruction for Upper Urinary Tract Obstruction
Live Surgery Performed by Ashok Hemal, MD
Moderators: Robert Nadler, MD and Magnus Annerstedt, MD
9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Partial Nephrectomy w/Fluorescence
Live Surgery Performed by Ronney Abaza, MD
Moderators: Guan Wu, MD and Peter Pinto, MD

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Surgical Therapies with Live Surgeries
Saturday, May 19
1:30 – 4 p.m.
Georgia World Congress Center – Sidney Marcus Auditorium – Building A, Level 4
Program Directors: Steven A. Kaplan, MD, and Jean de la Rosette, MD

This session will focus on surgical procedures to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Two moderators will discuss the common surgical treatments used to treat BPH in 2012, including the different types of laser and electro vaporization techniques. In addition, possible complications during surgery and their management will be discussed. The session will be enhanced with the broadcast of live surgeries of four different procedures, of which the surgeons and moderators will comment. Attendees are invited to ask questions and join in discussions.

Objectives: After attending this course, participants should be able to:
  • discuss the common procedures to treat BPH
  • appraise the technical aspects of these procedures
  • select the appropriate patient for which each surgery is applicable
  • identify the complications of BPH procedures and their management
